Using Wordle in English Language Arts - Tech skill level: 3 of 10 Not grade level specific.

By Jon Corippo

I think we've all seen Wordle by now. It's a very cool looking way to look at words, for fun, for vocabulary and so on.

What's a way to use Wordle to teach grammar, specifically, the eight parts of speech? Here's a quick and easy way to integrate Wordle.

First day of school: Instead of acrostic poems (blehh) or coloring (see what Dr. Mike Schmoker says about that) give the students a list of the eight parts of speech and have your students come up with three words about themselves in each category. Yes, they will need some assistance, but it's a great snapshot assessment of where they are skillwise. This can be paper/pen or in a one to one (ideally) a Google form embedded in your Moodle or Wiki.

Day Two: Have the kids pair share and make sure they have good quality answers and can articulate the definitions of the parts of speech in kid language at least. Once they have gotten approved by you, send them to Wordle to put their words in. They will be thrilled with their results. Instead of "training" the students, encourage them to try out all the different looks and colors Wordle allows. (One to one classes can obviously do this right away, in paper pen classses, they can share the mini lab or wait til lab day)

Make sure the kids send you a screenshot of their completed Wordles. You will look like a superstar at back to school night, as all the Wordles flip through your amazing Powerpoint (which you should also upload to Slideshare).

Is that it?

Heck no! All you have done is to get the template STARTED. Show a short and funny YouTube clip daily and have your students play the same game with someone or something in a 30 second video. Eight parts of speech as creativity and enjoyment! Revel in the divergent answers and creativity.

I'd do this activity daily for about two or three weeks. If you choose to then go to standardized textbooks, your kids will fly through.

After a couple practices, have the kids do the same activity on a favorite section of a book or poem in a series of guided learning exercises. Eventually,

you could use Wordle for all kinds of independent practice as well.

Other ideas for Wordle:

• Characterization word jumbles for "book reports" or lit circles

• One for each spelling word with two synonyms and antonyms
