Edmodo for Professional Development
I found a great book called Teens, Technology, & Literacy that I wanted to share with my staff. When I advertised a book study using the book, I had a lot of interest but we could not find a meeting time that worked for all involved. It almost seemed like a bust until I decided to use Edmodo to facilitate the activities and discussions online. This allowed the teachers to participate in the comfort of their own home, at their convenience.
I structured the book study so that we would discuss one chapter a week. In addition to reading the chapter and responding online to reflection questions and the posts of their colleagues, I was able to embed relevant links, videos, and documents to support the topics that were presented in the chapter. I used the "Assignment" function within Edmodo to "grade" each week's activities. The points given reflected the approximate amount of time that was spent each week. At the end of the study, I downloaded the grades in a spreadsheet and delivered it to my Staff Development department, then they credited each teacher with points corresponding to the time that they invested in the project.
This was a great way to include all teachers who had an interest, but couldn't participate in a traditional study. It also allowed the teachers to be a little bit more open because of the online interaction and the ability to supplement the text with multimedia resources was very helpful and effective.
